A new chatbot called ChatGPT or Chat GPT has taken the internet by storm, leaving many who use it astounded. OpenAI, a research firm specialising in artificial intelligence, made the platform available for public testing on December 1. The release of OpenAI's ChatGPT was a watershed moment in the evolution and democratization of AI.
The research lab was co-founded by Sam Altman, Elon Musk (left), and some notable individuals in Silicon Valley. ChatGPT is capable of understanding natural human language and generating thoughtful human-like prose after being fed a prompt. It can dream up everything from essays and poems to emails and computer code.
On the democratization of AI, Elon Musk, one of its founders, posed the question:
"What is the best thing we can do to ensure the future is good? We could sit on the sidelines or we can encourage regulatory oversight, or we could participate with the right structure with people who care deeply about developing AI in a way that is safe and is beneficial to humanity." Musk acknowledged that "there is always some risk that in actually trying to advance (friendly) AI we may create the thing we are concerned about"; nonetheless, the best defense is "to empower as many people as possible to have AI. If everyone has AI powers, then there's not any one person or a small set of individuals who can have AI superpower."
Here’s everything you need to know.
What is the AI bot ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a chatbot that allows users to ask questions and the platform uses artificial intelligence to reply. It is designed in such a way that users can receive both technical and jargon-free replies. GPT is an abbreviation for "Generative Pre-Trained Transformer." The AI-powered chatbot is available for public testing on OpenAI's official website.
Once the tests are completed, OpenAI will be able to extend ChatGPT's underlying technology to companies that rely on chatbots. The chatbot, for example, can be used for customer service, personal assistants, and students. It can also perform a wide range of tasks, including answering questions in far greater depth than Google, Siri, or Alexa can. It can form song lyrics, compose poems and solve complex mathematical problems.
OpenAI said the new AI was created with a focus on ease of use. “The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests, which distinguishes ChatGPT from other AI chatbots. It can even review and write code in seconds and spot errors in code written by others.
Screenshots of ChatGPT's work took over the Twitter timeline last week, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Monday that the tool now has more than 1 million users.
How does it work?
The system, which has been trained by AI and machine learning, is designed to provide information and answer questions via a conversational interface. The AI is trained using a massive sample of text from the internet.
In a tweet, Elon Musk, who is no longer on OpenAI's board, claimed that the system also learned from access to Twitter data. The Twitter founder added that he had disabled access "for the time being."
How can it be used?
Early adopters referred to the technology as an alternative to Google because it can provide descriptions, answers, and solutions to complex questions, such as how to write code, solve layout problems, and optimize queries.
Real-world applications could include creating content for websites, responding to customer inquiries, making recommendations, and developing automated chatbots.
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the system is "an early demonstration of what's possible." "You will soon be able to have helpful assistants who will talk to you, answer your questions, and give you advice." Later on, you can program something to do tasks for you. You can eventually have something that goes off and discovers new knowledge for you."
IS CHAT GPT FREE TO USE?
Yes, ChatGPT is currently free to use during OpenAI’s feedback period. The company hopes to use the reviews to improve the final version.
To try out ChatGPT:
Visit the official website here
Create an account
Select “for personal use”
Choose the feature you desire – for a conversation, click Q&A
Click Open in Playground
Type in your questions next to Q:
Click submit and wait for the answer to appear – it might take a few seconds.
Can ChatGPT oust Google Search?
At the time of writing, no, because Google is a search engine and ChatGPT is a chatbot. ChatGPT's main purpose is to simulate user conversations using natural language processing technology, whereas Google is designed to find information on the internet.
However, both platforms share one feature. They all serve the same purpose: to provide users with answers to a variety of questions.
Could ChatGPT replace humans?
There has been speculation that professions reliant on content creation, ranging from writers and professors to programmers and journalists, may become obsolete.
Academics have used the tool to generate responses to exam questions that they claim would result in full marks if submitted by an undergraduate, and programmers have used it to solve coding challenges in obscure programming languages in seconds.
The ability of technology to generate human-like written text has led to speculation that it could eventually replace journalists. However, at this point, the chatbot lacks the uniqueness, critical-thinking skills, and ethical decision-making ability required for successful journalism.
Its current knowledge base ends in 2021, rendering some queries and searches useless. ChatGPT can also give entirely wrong answers and present misinformation as fact
.
Conclusion
Let me end this with Sam Altman's tweet about the progress of the software:

PAST GREATS
TOMMASO CAMPANELLA (September 1568 – May 1639)
He was an Italian Dominican friar, philosopher, theologian, astrologer, and poet.
In 1594, he was charged with heresy by the Roman Inquisition and sentenced to two years in house arrest. In 1599, he was accused of conspiring against the Spanish rulers of Calabria and was tortured and imprisoned for 27 years. During this period, he wrote some of his most important works, including "The City of the Sun," a utopia describing an egalitarian theocratic society in which property is held in common.
During his imprisonment, Campanella wrote over 40 works on various subjects (many of which have since been lost). His philosophical views reflected the transition from the 16th to the 17th centuries.
