Google has a more capable bot than ChatGPT, but the company has been hesitant to make it public. However, with a competitor emerging, Google's reasons for keeping LaMDA private may begin to fade. A sophisticated, public chatbot like ChatGPT makes waiting for the perfect business model risky. You wait too long, you may lose the market.
Personally, for the time being, ChatGPT's threat to Google is purely hypothetical. The bot has no internet access, no knowledge beyond 2021 (or so it claims), and no advertisements. So, while it may deprive Google of some traditional queries, it will not bring the $1.2 trillion company to its knees. At least in its current form.
So What Is Google’s LaMDA AI?
Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed LaMDA, the company's "latest breakthrough in natural language understanding," at Google I/O 2021. The acronym stands for "Language Model for Dialogue Applications."
At its core, it's essentially a machine learning-powered chatbot designed to speak broadly about any topic, similar to IBM's Watson, but enhanced with better language understanding and language-generation abilities. Google stated at the time that it had only been trained on text, implying that LaMDA cannot create or respond to images, audio, or video (though Google was actively planning to expand those capabilities).
LaMDA is intended to be used in a variety of applications, including chatbots, virtual assistants, and conversational agents, where it can help to provide more natural and engaging interactions with users. It is part of a larger trend in the field of NLP (Natural language Processing) to develop more advanced language models that can better understand and generate human-like language, with the goal of enabling more effective and efficient communication between humans and machines. For example, you could "train" a machine-learning algorithm like GPT-3 on all of Shakespeare's works and then have it generate new original texts that read like Shakespeare.
At Google I/O in 2022, Google revealed "LaMDA 2," a more advanced version of conversational AI. This time, Google allowed "thousands of Googlers" to test it, apparently to reduce the number of instances of problematic or offensive answers. LaMDA 2 appears to have many of the same features and functionalities as the original, and it functions as a sophisticated general-purpose chatbot.
LaMDA isn't even Google's most sophisticated language processing model. PaLM (also revealed at I/O) is a larger and more sophisticated system that can handle problems that LaMDA cannot, such as math and code generation, using a more advanced processing system that verifies its work for greater accuracy.
Could ChatGPT outperform Google’s LaMDA?

PAST GREATS
GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (July 1856 – November 1950)
George Bernard Shaw was a prominent Irish playwright, critic, and political activist. He was born in Dublin, Ireland. Shaw began his career as a writer in the 1880s and quickly gained a reputation as a leading figure in the London literary scene. He wrote several plays and articles that were critical of the social and political conditions of the time, and his work often had a satirical edge. Shaw was also a prominent member of the Fabian Society, a political group that promoted socialist ideas.
Throughout his life, Shaw remained active in political and social causes. He was a vocal supporter of women's suffrage and was involved in the campaigns for the improvement of working conditions and the rights of the poor. Shaw received numerous awards and honours for his work, including the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925. He died at the age of 94 in 1950, leaving behind a rich legacy as one of the most influential playwrights and social critics of his time.
